Adventures with a mouse

When a friend of mine told me she was heading out on a trip of a lifetime to Disneyworld in Florida with her son, I was so excited for her.  And when she told me she wanted a custom bag made for the trip, I was even more excited.  My creative thoughts were all a jumble, and I couldn’t wait to get to work on my latest bespoke creation.

She told me that the bag had to be large enough to keep the things she needed for the day, but she didn’t want it to be so big that it would be hard to carry around.  As usual, when I make a bag for someone, I always ask what they’re going to put in it, and this helps me determine the size and sometimes the shape.  So we chatted for a bit, and through asking a few questions, I was able to determine how many internal pockets would be best, what sort of fastener would work – magnetic snap, twist and lock – what colours she would like, and roughly the shape and design.  Then, I was ready.

Kate had supplied me with her chosen fabric – a gorgeous vintage Mickey Mouse print, with a lovely grey and white polka dot fabric for the lining.  I was excited – it was going to be a wonderful project.  After collecting my notes, I mapped out my design on paper, prepared my measurements, and got to work.  When it was finished, it was beautiful, and I was very pleased with it.  But the success of any bespoke project is always determined by the client – would Kate like it?

Well, here’s what she said:

“Once again, Myrtle has surpassed my expectations!  Armed with some vintage design Disney fabric and a dodgy sketch of a messenger style Mary Poppins bag for my forthcoming trip, Myrtle took up the gauntlet, and ran with it!.  I collected my bag today, and, Oh My Word, I LOVE IT!!!.  It’s perfect, and I can’t wait to get on the plane and try it out.  Myrtle, you are amazing, and so, so talented.  Thank you so much!”

Well, that was wonderful – I was so glad she was happy with it.  She went on to have an amazing trip, using her custom-made bag every day, and when she got back, we met for a cuppa.  She told me “my gorgeous bag that you so lovingly created for me was absolutely perfect for days at Disneyworld.  Thank you so much, Myrtle, my bag was admired throughout the parks!”

I’m so glad I was able to make it for her.  Praise indeed; this is why I love bespoke work.  It gives me the opportunity to create something unique for a client, hopefully something that is personal and will be cherished for many years to come.
